This is a brilliant description, holy shit.
I think my favorite part of this is how Neal is like, I DON'T OPEN UP TO ANYBODY o hai Elizabeth whoops words are coming out of my mouth??? ...by which I mean, I just love how he is very much falling apart and clinging to the one thing he knows and knows well, which is the con and not giving anybody anything to work with, and Elizabeth somehow slips past his defenses.
Also, ugh, characters caring about each other even when they don't get the other person at all. And somehow having to figure out a way to tolerate how opposing the other person's world view is to their own, because they care about them too much to just leave. MY WEAK SPOT. I have a lot of weak spots, okay.
