It is far from a perfect show, and I did find myself wanting to punch Neal in the face rather a lot. Or shoot him in the chest. Mostly I wanted to shoot him in the chest. (There is a reason that my first foray into fanfiction was 9k-ish words of "NEAL HAS DONE A BAD THING AND HE SHOULD FEEL BAD.")
But there's so much about it that I love that I will deal with those things. (And if you're happy to approach your relationship with characters in a yelling-at-the-screen "YOU'RE BEING STUPID. STOP BEING STUPID. I'M GOING TO WRITE A FIC WHERE YOU LEARN HOW STUPID YOU'RE BEING JUST SO YOU CAN CUT IT OUT IN SOME ITERATION OF REALITY", well, then, this is the main character for you!)
And, hah, I'm not sure I have enough self-awareness to write a retrospective about my changing tastes in fiction. Though I'm curious about the trend you're seeing... :P
