Season 9 was one of the seasons I largely missed (I've only seen sporadic episodes from seasons 6-9), so I didn't see Cam's intro, but ... yeah. I've reacted that way with other characters. Telling me how awesome a character is? Especially when it's coming from the authorial voice and/or a character who is obviously functioning as an authorial stand-in ... THANK YOU, NO.
I get where it comes from. (I've almost certainly been guilty of it myself.) You love your characters! You want everybody to love them! So telling everybody how awesome they are and how much they should be loved is a great way to do that, right ...?

I think you can get away with more of that in fanfic than in original fiction. Actually, I think this is one of the areas where people who migrate from fanfic to original fiction often fall down, because they're used to dealing with an audience that are already on board the "We love the characters!" party train, so they don't know how to walk the audience through the process of organically falling in love with a character.
