especially as, about halfway through the writing process, I lost all ability to tell whether or not he was a villain
It's funny, because while making my comments, I was thinking about how this might be a story without villains. Lawrence kidnapped Neal and wanted to kill him, and his concept of the "universality of guilt," as the story put it, is pretty terrible, but he is trying to save the world. And he does send Neal back when sacrificing him no longer becomes necessary. So, yeah, I don't know about Lawrence. And of course there's Pandomaine, but, with the way he's used in the story, it almost feels like calling the iceberg the villain of Titanic. So, we've established that I have no clue.
