Yeah. And, I mean, Lawrence is pretty clearly an asshole. Like, the first thing he says to Peter is an encoded threat; when he asks if he's carrying "agrimony, bay, and black snake," according to the reference I was using, he's asking if he's carrying these:
[Agrimony: One of the few magic herbs believed to reverse a jinx, curse, or hex after it has been put on you.
Bay Leaf: For protection and to avoid being jinxed, especially if you are doing a job on someone else.
Black Snake Root: Provides magical protection and strengthens those who are weak, timid, afraid, or shy.]
The first thing he says is, "Get out of my way or I will curse you."
...and at the same time, he's hanging out in Fort Tilden instead of going "Fuck this shit!" and moving off to become a crime lord in Chicago, or something. And when Pandomaine attacks, he doesn't just run off somewhere safe on his baboonstork steed, he goes to great personal trouble to call on Paimon and his legions to turn Pandomaine back, even when he knows that Pandomaine isn't going to kill Neal and he can find Neal and bring him back if he decides to use the opportunity to run.
And, in a weird way, I feel like the fact that he lets Peter pull his switch is significant. Because if he wanted to stick it to Peter, he could have dragged Neal back in. But instead, he basically shrugs and says "Fine, we'll do it your way." Which is the weirdest favor to do someone ever, considering the favor is sacrificing the person he's doing the favor for, but argh. It's all confusing. He's an antagonist, definitely, but he skirts a weird line around villainy.
And oh, Pandomaine. It is not his/its fault that the people who summoned it failed to read the fine print. Granted, the fine print wasn't available for them to read, but that's still not Pandomaine's fault.
